Play music and podcasts


Enjoy the music in your phone. Your can play music in digital format with the music player in your device. Your music player supports a large variety of file formats such as MP3, AAC, eAAC, eAAC+, WMA, WAV and Midi.

Your device’s 8 GB of internal mass memory lets you store a large amount of digital music. And by using a memory card you can expand the storage space. The Nokia N86 also has integrated stereo speakers, which lets you listen to music without a headset.


To listen to music:

  1. Select Menu > Music > Music player.
    • You can also start by pressing the Play pause key on the short slide of your phone.
  2. The music menu shows the available music. To view all songs, sorted songs or playlists in the music menu, select the desired option.
  3. To return to the standby mode and leave the player playing in the background, press the end key, or to switch to another open application, press and hold the menu key.

To stop playing, you can use the Play pause key key on your short slide keys or select Pause in your music player view.


To modify the tone of the music playback by selecting Options > Equaliser.


To modify the balance and stereo image or to enhance bass, select Options > Audio settings.


To view a visualisation during playback, select Options > Show visualisation.


Music player

Short slide keys

Your device has short slide keys, which enables multitasking. You can control your music player even if it is in the background and you are doing something else. Use the keys to skip to the next or previous track, press the Play/Pause key to make the forward and rewind keys available.

Please note, however, that if the application that is running is using the short slide keys itself, the multitasking mentioned above is not possible.This is the case, e.g., with Photos, which uses the short slide keys for zooming.

Search for podcasts

You can also use Music player to listen to podcast episodes. Podcasting is the method for delivering audio or video content over the internet using either RSS or Atom technologies for playback on mobile devices and PCs.

You play the podcasts you have downloaded to your device with your music player. Choose the desired podcast from the music library’s podcasts.

With the Nokia Podcasting application, you can seach for, discover, subscribe to, and download podcasts; and play, manage, and share audio and video podcasts with your device.

To search for new podcasts:

  1. Select Menu > Music > Podcasting.
    • Select Search, and enter the search keyword or podcast title.
    • Select Directories to access web directories to search for new podcasts.

Note that retrieving podcasts using a packet data connection involves data transmissions through your service provider’s network. The recommended connection method is WLAN.

Note also that you may have to refresh the music and podcast libraries after you have updated the song or podcast selection in your device. To add all available items to the library, in the Music player main view, select Options > Refresh library.
