Answers to important questions about   Nokia N97

  • How to get more free space in the phone memory of my Nokia N97 device?

If your Nokia N97 device is showing messages like "Memory full. Delete or move some data from C: Phone memory" or "Memory low. Delete or move some data from C: Phone memory", you can try to increase the amount of free phone memory (C: Phone memory) as described below.

With phone software version 20.x.019 and later it is possible to free some memory by running the Memory reorganiser application. The application will move some of the data files and applications from C: Phone memory to E: Mass memory.  The application is available for downloading via the SW Update application for version 20.x.019 and later. If an older phone software version is in use, the software must be upgraded first. The current software version can be checked by typing in the command *#0000#.

Memory reorganiser can be run in the following way:

  1. Select Menu > Applications > SW Update.
  2. Select Memory reorganiser.
  3. Select Options > Start Update.
  4. After the installation is finished, start the application by selecting Menu > Applications > Reorganiser.

When the reorganisation of the memory has been completed, the Memory reorganiser application will remove itself automatically.

If Memory reorganiser is not available via SW Update menu, the memory reorganisation may already have been performed in your device. This can be checked in Menu > Settings > Application mgr. > Installed apps. where the application Reorganiser Uninstaller can be found if the reorganisation has already been completed.

If the Memory reorganiser is not available for your device or it doesn't help, check the following:

  1. Clear the web browser cache to release memory used by the cache (in web browser, select Options > Clear privacy data > Cache).
  2. If you have your own files stored in C: Phone memory, move them to E: Mass memory with File Manager application (to start File Manager, select Menu > Applications > Office > File mgr.).
  3. Check that the captured photos are not stored in phone memory (in Camera application, check Options > Settings > Memory in use).
  4. With File Manager application, check that there are no photos and music files stored in C: Phone memory.
  5. If you have applications installed in phone memory, remove the applications that are not needed, or move them to mass memory by removing and reinstalling the application (select Menu > Settings > Application mgr. > Installed apps. to check and uninstall the applications).
  6. With File Manager, check the folder Video clips in C: Phone memory and move the videos to E: Mass memory (e.g. home_screen.mp4 if it is there).
  7. If still low on the phone memory, change the messaging memory from C: Phone memory to E: Mass memory in Menu > Messaging > Options > Settings > Other > Memory in use. (Note that the messaging memory will switch back to C: Phone memory and you need to set this again if you connect the device to PC in Mass storage mode).
  8. The calendar entries, contacts and notes reside in the phone memory. Remove the objects which are not needed.
  9. If using Nokia Messaging email client (Nokia Email) and if there are a lot of messages in your mailbox, select that Headers only or Headers plus are by default downloaded to your device (to control the email download  size, select in Nokia Messaging client Options > Tools > Settings > What to sync > Inbox > Email download size).

The available free phone memory can be viewed in File Manager by selecting Menu > Applications > Office > File mgr. and checking the free memory status of C: Phone memory. The memory usage details can be viewed by selecting C: Phone memory > Options >  Details > Memory.

If it is not possible to release enough memory and it's desired to restore the device to the original state, the device can be reset by typing *#7370# in standby mode. Before the device is reset, you need to provide the lock code. The default lock code is 12345. Resetting the device will permanently erase all user data and settings as well as add-on applications and operator specific settings. The mass memory (E:) and memory card (F:) contents will be preserved. It is recommended to take a backup before resetting the device.

  • Why does GPS not always work well on my Nokia N97 device even though I am outdoors with good GPS conditions?

GPS (Global Positioning System) problems, lost GPS signal or poor GPS reception may occur if the GPS antenna gets covered by hand or something else. This can heavily affect the GPS performance.

The GPS antenna in Nokia N97 is located under the camera module area. Care should be taken to avoid covering the antenna. For example, when holding the device by two hands when the device is folded open, the left hand could easily cover the GPS antenna and cause performance issues.

If using Ovi Maps application, check also that the latest version is installed in the device to be sure that all the GPS performance improvements of the Maps application are included. Ovi Maps updates can be checked and installed by going to Menu > Applications > SW Update.

Note that there can be also other issues affecting the GPS performance, e.g.:

  • GPS signal cannot usually be received indoors.
  • Buildings blocking the GPS signal.
  • Weather conditions.
  • UV protected windscreens in a car.
  • Getting GPS signal may take a long time, especially if the network connection is not available and Assisted GPS (A-GPS) is not enabled in the positioning methods.

If not getting GPS signal, try moving to an open place with clear view to the sky. Check also that Assisted GPS is enabled in the positioning methods, this will substantially speed up getting the GPS fix (select Menu > Settings > Phone > Application sett. > Positioning > Positioning methods > Assisted GPS). Note that there will be a small amount of data transferred over the internet connection with Assisted GPS and data charges may incur.

  • Why does my device have a data connection continuously active?

A data connection is automatically established when the online mode has been selected in the home screen settings. The home screen widgets can then automatically fetch the latest information from internet and show it on the home screen.

The automatic data connection can be disabled by selecting the offline mode in the home screen settings:

  • Select  Options > Content to offline mode

Note that the data connection may be opened automatically also by some other applications, for example by the email clients. The home screen setting doesn't affect the connections opened by these applications.

  • Why does a user-defined ringing tone sometimes change to the default ringing tone?

The default ringing tone is played instead of the user-defined ringing tone if the system resources are low and there's not enough resources to play the user-defined tone. The device will revert to the default tone if it takes too long time to start playing the user defined tone. The issue may occur e.g. when there's a large number of applications concurrently active or if there's some other constraints preventing the music tone to be played within the allocated time.

The issue is usually temporary and the following actions will help to ensure that the device can properly play the user defined tones:

  • Close some of the applications if there are many applications active at the same time. Press and hold the menu key to see the list of currently active applications.
  • Use small files for ringing tone, avoid using large music files.
  • If an image is attached to the contact details, avoid using large images (displaying of a large image or photo at the same time when starting to play the ringing tone may cause resource issues).
  • Move the ringing tone file to C: Phone memory to speed up the playing (remember, though, to keep your other music files on the mass memory to avoid filling up the phone memory).

Improvements for handling of the ringing tone are included in N97 version 22.x.110 and N97 mini version 12.x.110. It is recommended to upgrade to these (or later) software versions if available for your device.

Note that if the ringing tone file is located on memory card, the tone will change to Nokia default tone if the memory card is removed.

  • Why does the software update fail in my device with error "Not enough memory for update"?

The software update may fail if there's not enough free space on the phone memory (C: drive). The phone memory should have at least 8 MB free space. The current consumption can be seen by selecting Menu > Applications > Office > File Mgr.

If there's not enough free space, release some data for example by checking the following:

  • When installing additional applications, install them to the mass memory (E:) instead of phone memory.
  • Make sure that photo and video storage is on mass memory.
  • If there's still not enough free memory, you can set the message saving location to mass memory by selecting Menu > Messaging > Options > Settings > Other > Memory in use > E: Mass memory (this is, however, not recommended if there's any other means to release memory).

  • Can I restore my messages from a backup if the messages were stored on E: Mass memory?

When using Nokia N97 software version 21.0.045 or later to backup and restore the messages via the Menu > Applications > File mgr. > Backup application to the memory card, the messages can be successfully restored also when the default messaging store has been changed from C: Phone memory to E: Mass memory.

With the earlier device software versions there are some limitations with the backup when the message store is on E: Mass memory. The messages cannot be restored and the restoration may remove them from the mass memory. To avoid losing the messages located on E: Mass memory for example when resetting the device, the following steps should be taken:

  1. Take a backup to memory card in Menu > Applications > File mgr. > Backup.
  2. Reset the device.
  3. To restore, select Menu > Applications > File mgr. > Backup > Options > Restore.
  4. Unselect the option "Messages", select other options as needed.
  5. Restore the backup and restart the device.
  6. Change the messaging memory back to E: Mass memory by selecting Menu > Messaging > Options > Settings > Other > Memory in use > E: Mass memory.

After the above steps the messages on E: Mass memory should be available again.

Note that it is preferred to use Ovi Suite or PC Suite for backup and restore rather than File mgr. application. With Ovi Suite and PC Suite the eventual backup problems with the messages stored on E: Mass memory can be avoided.

  • Is it possible to update N97 software version 11.x.021 over-the-air via SW Update (FOTA)?

Nokia N97 running the software version 11.0.021 can be updated over-the-air (FOTA) by using the SW Update application but the software package Install Before Phone Software must be installed first in the N97 v11.0.021 device. This software package modifies the FOTA Default Server Profile in N97 to allow the phone software update. The software package must be installed separately before the phone software can be updated. The phone software installation does not start if the package has not been installed first to the device.

The package Install Before Phone Software is needed only when updating N97 version 11.0.021 (or earlier) over-the-air. With the newer N97 software versions the phone software can be updated directly as in step 5 below.

The following steps need to be taken when updating the N97 phone software from v11.0.021:

  1. Go to Menu > Applications > SW Update.
  2. Unselect Phone software.
  3. Select Install Before Phone Software.
  4. Select Options > Start update.
  5. After the update is successfully completed, select Phone software.
  6. Select Options > Start update.

Note that the availability of the FOTA update packages may vary depending on the device variant. If no FOTA package is available, check if the software update package is available via Nokia Ovi Suite.

  • What to do if I cannot access the destination settings after upgrading the Nokia N97 phone software?

After upgrading Nokia N97 phone software to version 21.x.045 or 22.x.110, the destination menu (Menu > Settings > ConnectivityDestinations) may not be accessible any more in certain device variants. If the problem occurs, do the following to recover:

  1. Take a backup either with Ovi Suite to the PC or with File Manager to the memory card. When using memory card, the backup can be taken by selecting Menu > Applications > Office > File mgr. > Backup > Options > Back up now.
  2. Reset the device by entering *#7370# on the keypad. Give the lock code when prompted (default 12345).
  3. When the device restarts, select the country and set the date and time.
  4. Restore from the backup everything else except the Settings. When restoring from memory card, go to Menu > Applications > Office > File mgr. > Backup > Options > Restore and select Messages, Contacts, Calendar entries, Bookmarks and Files. Don't select Settings.
  5. Start the Phone setup application to get operator settings. Select  Menu > Applications > Phone setup > Sett. Wizard > Operator. Alternatively if you have already received settings SMS from your operator you may use that message to configure operator settings.
  6. Recreate missing WLAN access points in Menu > Settings > Connectivity > Destinations > Access point.
